The Kiss, Gustav Klimt, 1907-08
Gustav Klimt, the Vienna master painted the Kiss painting in 1907. The painting depicts a couple surrounded by a gold blanket and ornaments sharing a moment of shear passion - the perfect kiss. Oil and gold on canvas, 180 x 180 cm Osterreichische Galerie, Vienna Klimt's style drew upon an enormous range of sources: classical Greek, Byzantine, Egyptian, and Minoan art; late-medieval painting and the woodcuts of Albrecht Durer. In synthesizing these diverse sources, Klimt's art achieved both individuality and extreme elegance.
