Bacchus was probably commisioned by Cardinal Riario, who refused to accept it. It was then purchased by Jacopo Galli. It stood amongst a collection of antiques in the garden of galli's Roman house for many years The statue has been in the Bargello since 1873 All marble sculptures are custom made one sculpture at a time. The artist always starts with a clay model.
